What! I now owe custom fees when my item arrives?
It showed free shipping on the order I purchased. I didn’t see anything else to alert me this was an international purchase. Now it shows I’ll owe more money that I never agreed to when the item arrives customs.
That’s crazy considering the custom fee could be more then the whole needlepoint cost.
how to stop this?

I hate to seem flippant but - - - - - VOTE!
I am also a needle-worker, embroiderer, sometimes needlepointer. DMC cotton embroidery floss and pearl cotton are made in and imported from France. I fully expect to see higher costs for DMC at Michael's, Walmart, etc. My closest local needlework shop (LNS) already prices their DMC higher than those chain retailers, and I am sure they'll eventually raise their price as well.
I think that, as eBay buyers, we will have to start being more aware of the Item Location, and buy from American sellers.
BUT we also need to be aware and accept that, even when we buy from a USA-based eBay seller, and/or when we purchase online from an LNS, those sellers may have already paid the tariff ("customs fee" or "import tax"). It is only reasonable and appropriate for those sellers to raise the price they ask their customers (you and me) to pay, to cover their own outlay of tariffs.
BTW and FTR, I did not vote for this.
