What do I do now
Summary: jwfa01 shared a frustrating experience where a Coach backpack they sold was lost after being dropped off at a UPS location for USPS pickup. The tracking showed 'USPS awaiting item', leading to a refund issued to the buyer from jwfa01's account. Despite filing reports with the police and USPS, no resolution was found, and eBay was unable to assist. jacbarcollectibles and golfingaddict discussed the confusion of using USPS labels at UPS locations, highlighting the lack of a scan as a major issue, making it difficult to prove the package's drop-off. golfingaddict advised about the importance of proper scanning, while another participant, gosimus, raised concerns about the security of the drop-off bin.
I listed a coach backpack for $150, and made a label for my item on June 6th and only had time to drop it off June 9th. I dropped it off at UPS for USPS to pick up from there. I then received a message from the buyer showing that it didn’t update and the tracking number showed “USPS awaiting item”. Which was weird since I dropped it off. The buyer has since received a refund which came out of my account. And I don’t have the bad its shown as lost. I filed a report with the police and with USPS. No one has been able to help me. I’m done $150 and don’t have my item either. I tried Appealing with EBay and they’re also just as useless.

MentorJul 18, 2026 at 6:42 PMYou do not have proof you shipped it.
When you leave a package with a carrier, it is best to have it scanned.
With no scan, no one is going to be able to help you. You have to provide the item or a refund to the buyer. Since you could not provide the item, the buyer was refunded from your account.
I can't even suggest help from the carrier (ups or usps) because you have no proof that they received it. Do you even know what carrier you purchased the label from ? if you give it to the wrong carrier, they will not just give it to some other carrier.
eBay is not useless in this case. They are not responsible for your missteps or errors.
It's a tough lesson to learn because you are out the cost of the bag.
I'm sorry, you have no options.

OPJul 18, 2026 at 7:24 PMIt’s a usps shipping label, UPS has a bin for USPS employees to come pick up packages.

MentorJul 18, 2026 at 7:30 PMIt seems like a risky proposition to drop off a UPS bin at USPS.
Was this a ground saver package? IF so, you need to know that the Post Office has a policy to not pass on those packages.
Drop‑off: Must be tendered only to authorized UPS locations (UPS Store, UPS Access Point, UPS Drop Box, or UPS host system)
Do not hand packages to USPS, even if the label shows a USPS tracking number — this can cause disposal, void insurance, and lose carrier liability

< UPS has a bin for USPS employees to come pick up packages >
Is that bin in a secure location? I'm mentally picturing one of those big canvas tubs out in the lobby where somebody might steal a package under camouflage of dropping off their own package.

OPJul 18, 2026 at 8:53 PMI have camera footage of the usps workers picking it up the same day, but even so it should’ve been scanned when they picked it up. It’s my first time selling on eBay and I wasn’t really familiar with the best way. I usually ship items for refunds of things I’ve purchased myself through UPS, the buyer chose USPS and I was told I could take it to UPS and USPS does pick ups from there.
