What are Seller Liabilities for Incorrect Package Dimensions?
Hi,
I'm currently auctioning a bicycle component and inadvertently entered "1102 x 14 x 10 in" for the package dimensions. The actual package is 14 x 10 x 10 in. The auction listing says that the item will ship to the United States, but does not alllow prospective buyers to see or calculate any other shipping information, which has led to some confusion. I am unable to correct the error since the item has one bid as of this post.
Weirdly, when I go to the "Revise Listing" page, I can see shipping information listed correctly with the exception of the typo mentioned above. Details as follows, none of which is visible to the buyer:
As a result, I edited the Item Description to offer free shipping, asking the winning bidder to contact me before payment so I can make the adjustment to shipping cost. I made sure to clearly state that I will only ship to U.S. addresses and cover up to the maximum USPS estimated cost of $22.45.
My questions to the Ebay community are:
What are my liabilities here?
Am I violating any ebay rules or am I opening myself up to some type of scam by offering free shipping in the Item Description?
Should I simply end the auction and relist (incurring a fee)?

Mentor3 years agoYou can’t change the shipping after there is a bid. Since the system can’t calculate the shipping, you will have to invoice the winning bidder.
Your additions to the description are fine - you didn’t have to offer free shipping, but it doesn’t violate any rules. I don’t know of any written rules on how to handle a situation where the system can not provide the information to the buyer 🙂

OP3 years agoThanks for the quick reply wooden_flower. I definitely tried to rectify the situation as best/fairly as I possibly could.
Since ebay accepted the erroneous package dimensions, I don't know why they state that seller did not provide shipping details. I could have then made a note of that error with a quick edit to the item description, which could have ended the confusion.
Re: offering free shipping, I made the assumption that it may provide an incentive bid a bit higher on the item:) At this point, I'd be happy if the winnnig bidder reads the shipping info I provided and the auction ends smoothly.
