W-9 Taxpayer Identification Number Request
Do I need to fill this out and return it to ebay? I am just an occasional buyer and seller.
I do not own a business or have a tax ID number.
Not sure what to do with this.
Thanks.

·3 years agoeBay billed the buyer and collected the sales tax. You didn't receive it. It's not income or money you received. You don't claim it or report it .
Please get advice from a tax expert.

·3 years agoYou are wrong.
eBay doesn't send tax to the IRS.
They report your sales to the IRS. By law they need your Social Security number if you sell here.
You should seek the advice of tax specialist.

Mentor3 years agoYou should fill it out and send it in, if you want to be able to sell in the future. The reporting requirement for 2023 (so far) is only $600 so eBay must be prepared to report your payments to the IRS.

OP3 years agoI'm curious though, my listings charge the the buyer tax, which is paid, but I don't know where it goes, it doesn't come to me.
I'm assuming the tax goes to Uncle Sam, which I think would mean my ebay income has already been taxed and paid, right?
Thanks for your time.

Mentor3 years agoHi @silikosaska
Buyers pay SALES tax, which is sent to the individual state each item is delivered to. [‘Uncle Sam’ is the federal government.]
That has nothing to do with the INCOME tax that you may be required to pay.
