The only way I'd ever pay for a vehicle is handing over cash, as the seller hands over the endorsed title. After inspecting the vehicle, preferably having a mechanic with me to inspect it. And I absolutely would never pay a "deposit"... any seller who demands a deposit has seen the last of me. Incidentally, that's also the only way I'd ever sell a vehicle.
