Variations listings...testing thereof...
I have been struggling to understand variations listings. The experience has been quite daunting. However, I have gotten to the point where I can create a listing with selectable items. I wanted to check and make sure it was working and immediately found out it cannot be tested in preview mode.
So, as I have a number of free listings per month, I went ahead and listed it, with notes in it saying it was a test page only. I can see the drop down menu and I can see the items I entered for purchase. Everything is there. The problem I am having is that I wanted to check and see if it was working so I tried to add items to my cart. I have no intention of buying them, I just wanted to see if the process worked.
So, I tried to add items to my cart and I got an error message saying as much. At one point I clicked the button that says look at the items in my cart and got some weird computer gibberish for an error. I don't know if this is failing because the system prevents me from doing this with my own account or if there is some other issue I am overlooking. Again, I know I can't purchase from myself, but am I also prevented from adding items to my own cart as long as I don't click Buy or Purchase? I could take the listing live and try to access it from a friends computer, but I sure would like to make sure everything is good BEFORE I create a live listing.
Also, I see that many people have created variations that include items with varying prices, but everything I have read, and several comments on this site, say that variations is for items all priced the same. But since there are quite a few listings that don't follow that rule, is it actually a rule?
Thanks in advance.

When you create a variations listing, you get a grid where you can price each combination at a different price. There is only 1 shipping amount, although you can add an amount for each additional item if you used fixed shipping.
You cannot put your own items in your cart. You could ask a friend to try it, but try not use each other’s internet connections - this will forever link your accounts. If one of you runs afoul of eBay policies, it will restrict you both.
Start with a simple variations listing - just a single attribute. Add just a few variations. Add all of the prices, photos, etc and let it go live. You’ll be able to see if the listing is right or not since it will be a simple pick from list.
There are rules for test listings, be sure to follow those if you set one up.

OP8 months agoThank you for your reply. It confirmed my suspicions about what was happening. I did use my wife's computer to test the live listing and it worked. If I run afoul of eBay, she won't be affected as she doesn't use that site.
Everything on eBay seems to be a challenge to be unraveled, I am not sure why the process isn't easier as it seems that a well functioning site would be beneficial to eBay's bottom line.
Regardless, your answer, at least, provided some useful information. I thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge.
