USPS lost package. am i responsible?
i shipped an item to a buyer. USPS provided tracking and item movement until 12/28/2024. now, it shows that the item will be delivered soon, but, buyer requested a refund. Buyer picked shipping method and paid for it. he did not add insurance or requested to do so.
if USPS lost the item, am i responsible?

-YOU set the listing up with the shipping choices, not the Buyer.
-If the Buyer simply messaged you for a refund you do NOT refund them until they file a claim that they have not received the item.
-If they file that claim it runs 4 days and YOU upload the tracking number to the claim.
-I assume you print your labels through eBay, you can ADD extra insurance over the built-in $ 100 up to the item's sold price. Insurance is for YOUR protection. The Buyer has nothing to do with how you insure YOUR shipments.
-On day 4 of the claim you can contact eBay and ask for an extension, they can extend the claim up to 10 days.
-You can file a Missing Mail piece with USPS to see if that will shake the item loose: USPS.com® - Sign In
-You need to make sure that you refund at the end of the claim period then you can pursue the insurance claim with USPS.

Yes, you would be responsible if the item is not received by the buyer by the latest estimated date of delivery.
Sellers are responsible for insuring their packages, not the buyer, since insurance is for the benefit for the seller.
If you do refund the buyer, you can file a claim with USPS if the package was insured. (If you used Ebay shipping label, there is automatic insurance up to $100)
