USED vs FOR PARTS & conflicts with "Returns not accepted"
Hi! I am a camera / vintage electronics hobbyist. Lots of buying and selling experience on ebay. Any one care to share some thoughts about listing trends? I think the AI descriptions are atrocious. Wish sellers were required to write something. Worse, ebay listing system seems to facilitate a conflict - sellers may list an item as "used" (often adding "untested" in the listing title) with a no returns policy. But eBay's definition of "used" is detailed and specific and laid out in plain words on every listing: "An item that has been used previously. The item may have some signs of cosmetic wear, but is fully operational and functions as intended. This item may be a floor model or store return that has been used. See the seller’s listing for full details and description of any imperfections."
For example, if a camera ends up not working, then the seller must accept the return, despite the "no returns" listing, because the camera didn't meet criteria for "used" if it's not in working condition. Seems to me that an electronics/ tech item that hasn't been tested or is not guaranteed to work should be listed "for parts" status IF a no return policy is to be permitted and/or enforceable.
Ebay listing protocols allow this to occur. Unsuspecting or unaware sellers to click "used" without a pop-up or warning about what "used" entails. Rather, there is a tiny option information button to click if desired (not required). Suggestion to ebay: I really wish a pop-up window would open with a warning that a "used" condition item is guaranteed to work as intended, with caveats fully detailed (in a non AI generated description by seller), and that returns may be authorized if it's not working.

Ebay has a Condition Guide for every category. For the Camera category, Used means it's fully functional.
If you listed the camera as Used and the Buyer is saying it's not working, that sale is covered by the eBay 30-day Money Back Guarantee. That Guarantee overrides an individual Seller's return policy.
If the Buyer opened an Item Not as Described refund request, you would only have three business days to either accept the return or issue a refund. When you accept the return, eBay will automatically send the Buyer a prepaid return label from you.
Once the camera is returned, you would need to issue a full refund. If the returned camera is actually exactly as described, then report the Buyer for misuse of the Money Back Guarantee.

OP7 months agoThank you for replying. I totally appreciate that ebay has a guarantee - I've returned items based on that policy a few times, which is why I posted the above . What I'm suggesting is that ebay do something to avoid the disappointment, the hassle of returns, and wasted time and energy - that is, to educate and guide the sellers who aren't experts at what their peddling, perhaps offering more automated guidance during the listing process rather than a cheesy possibly overzealous automated description

I completely understand what you are saying and agree 💯.
When we read and respond to posts, we spend time researching the question and try to give a thoughtful response. What we see over and over, is both Buyers and Sellers just don't want to hear what the eBay policies are and don't want to change.

Mentor7 months ago@440inspace. The eBay Money Back Guarantee overrules the sellers no return policy which is for buyers remorse returns only on most listings. These listings have a 30 day MBG.
However The For Parts or Not working listings that have a no return policy have only a 3 day from the date of delivery eBay MBG.
It is best to ask questions of sellers before bidding or buying if you are unsure of their description.
