US Purchase International Return
I am in the US. I bought an item at $36 USD, that arrived in 3 days. Upon receipt I found that the item was not what I expected, was an inferior quality Chinese made version of what I thought I was buying, so, I started the return process the same day, only to discover that I had to return the $36 item to Japan! Then, to obtain a tracking number, I found the cheapest cost to return ship was $26!
It seems unethical to me that I was unaware that the seller is not in the US. In addition, since the delivery was so quick (3 days) I know the ship from location had to be in the US, so I naturally assumed the return would be to a US address as well. As soon as I learned all this, I almost did not return the item once USPS told me the cost, but then I thought it might be worth returning just so I could raise this concern with eBay.
My questions are, how is this possible? And…is there a means to recoup the difference in cost to ship to Japan, vs. what it would cost me to ship to what I expected would be a US address?
Thanks,
Jim

Much better, the listing states it is located in Higashiyamato, Japan.
Despite the No returns policy you are still protected by the eBay Money Back Guarantee for an item that is not as described and "Does not match pictures or description". eBay Money Back Guarantee policy
What reason did you select on the return claim you filed through eBay???
The seller may ship from a US based warehouse type set up but have their returns set up for Japan, to me that is not right. You may want to reach out to eBay but we recently learned that many of the links we post to Request a call back are now simply forwarding members to eBay's Customer Service "How can we help you today?" page (link below). On that page members have to complete numerous choices before being given ways to be in direct contact with eBay. Depending on the subject, representative availability and other factors requesting a call back may or may not be possible. Chat or an email may be provided. If you get a Chat box Type “AGENT in the box. You can also contact eBay through Social Media if you have accounts there.

OP6 months agoThanks again for all your support on this.
The reason for return I put “Ordered the wrong item”. This was the closest to accurate option that I felt would not throw the seller under the bus. I was worried if I got too negative, that this would become unproductive and not nice toward the seller. I took this approach seeing that the seller had pretty good reviews thus far.
The real reason for the return is that the part, while on eBay, it looks similar and functionally it does fit, it does not come close to the part I am replacing - in several areas that I fear will affect performance and longevity of the blender this part is for, as well as for the part itself. The material is inferior quality, the blades are not shaped or cut close to match the original, and they are noticeably shorter in length than the original blades. None of this was apparent on the eBay images, only when comparing with the original after receipt.
I will start with your first suggested contact option and try to navigate to a satisfactory solution with eBay.
I am no longer on social media, by personal choice. Usually this blissful arrangement suits me just fine, but every once in a while - like now, I wonder if I made the right decision 🙂 So if no joy from eBay, I will suck it up and be more aware of these things going forward.
Anyway - I do want to thank you for your help. You’ve been great and very helpful!!
Best,
J
