UPS Overcharge
Summary: 1ofstrength shared their experience with a UPS overcharge when selling an item on eBay. They reported being charged $1450 after UPS reclassified their package due to claimed overweight dimensions, resulting in eBay suspending their account. mr_lincoln suggested that due to low activity, eBay might have flagged the account, misunderstanding it as potentially hacked. 1ofstrength confirmed they handed the item directly to a UPS worker and has faced challenges with eBay customer service in resolving the issue. mr_lincoln explained that resolving this with eBay's Trust and Safety Department might be difficult due to the outstanding charge.
eBay customer for many years. I sold a item on eBay pay the shipping and was OVER charged by UPS $1450.
Sold a car item via auction. Paid for shipping
Packed and measured/weighed the item 5 times.
Dropped off at UPS depot by hand. Item delivered auction closed
UPS came back 5 days later and said item was over the limit and charged an extra $1000 penalty plus fees. Claimed the item was over 400lbs due to its dimensions.
They classified the unit as freight and probably put the item in a crate, hence 400lbs
eBay passed it onto me and has suspended my account.
Ebay customer service is not savvy enough to understand the issue and just is following UPS lead.
OML charge was accessed and they should have never sent it, since it wasn't paid for properly
The package was reclassified after accepting at UPS shipping depot. My contact information is on the eBay shipping label as required. Could of just contacted me.
I was never given a chance to accept nor decline the new shipping costs. eBay does not do things on credit and this shipping was sent as bill me later.
This is unjust since I was not informed of the upcharge and could not decline the offer. Shipping costs are double the auction sale price, hence UPS would be the only parties making money on this.
eBay customer service is not skilled enough to correctly address the issue. English is second language for them

When did all of this happen? I do not see any Sold items on your account in the last 90 days. You also have not received any Feedback in the last 12 months. eBay most likely views your account as either low activity or possibly dormant and then out of the blue you sell an item of some value. All of that sort of triggers eBay bots to suspend or shut down the activity on your account - they may view it as having been hacked.
You said you dropped the item off, does that mean you actually gave it to a UPS worker or just dropped it in a drop off lane or place? If the latter you lose complete control of the shipment and UPS may have seen the opportunity to take more money from you. They are just the carrier, eBay is blind to all of that so would have no influence in changing UPS's position or ultimate charge.

OP1 month agoThis happened a while ago 2024. I have tried many times to rectified this issue with customer service and got absolutely no where. My account is suspended because I refuse to pay this unknown charge. I made one more attempt to get through to someone with no closure. I was an active seller up until this point.
I handed the item to a UPS worker with a uniform on. They looked at the label and said thank you your all set.

Thank you for the reply. It looks like you did it right and UPS had the opportunity to tell you the package was insufficient when you handed it to them.
At this point you are most likely considered permanently suspended and even if the $ 1,450 amount is resolved eBay may simply block you from trying to sell again even if you try opening an different account. It would suffer the same fate as your current account.
The only Dept at eBay that can activate your account again is the Trust and Safety Dept but with the outstanding $ 1,450 issue they may not be able to do anything.
Really sorry it happened.

OP1 month agoeBay policy need revision. How do I contact Trust & Safety. I'd like to plead my case, since I see this as unjust. No one would think this is fair if was happening to them. I don't care if the shipping was calculated wrong. They still should have not sent it and held until money was paid. Not "Oh we claim you made a mistake and we are allowed to do whatever we want and you'll have to pay for it".
