Unable to update eBay account email address

Question

Recently opened a new business account and used a email address to complete the process. A few days later, I'd like to update to my home email address to make my eBay life easier. When I edit the existing email and submit the new one, I get a, "this email is already in use" type response. This jogged a long ago memory of having an eBay account back in the early '90s which I was able to get into and change the account email address to a work address, thinking that this would "free-up" the desired email address. But no-go. Still getting that same warning about the email address is already in use. Tried clearing cache in the browser, tried a different PC... no good news yet. Any thoughts to what may be getting in the way here?

Each eBay account needs a unique email address, so you will need a new address for this account.

Some email providers allow more than one email address to point to the same inbox, though:
