Tracking shows delivered but it was not

Question

I have an item I shipped on May 22nd. It shows delivered the same day to a post office box in the same city from which I mailed it. The package was not delivered but now the post office is telling me the tracking number is not legitimate and that I need to get the accurate tracking number from ebay so that the post office can locate the package. The label shows the tracking number ebay provided so I am at a total loss. Anyone know what I'm talking about here?

-Did you stand in line at the Post Office, have the clerk scan the package and leave with a receipt?

-The counter scanners can be set to scan a package delivered if a customer is picking up at the counter or for outbound packages that have to be shipped somewhere. Human error can inadvertently scan a package DELIVERED when in fact it is supposed to be scanned as an outbound shipment. In all likelihood that is what happened.
