Theft by seller
Summary: vladinsane reported a situation where a seller, after refunding a service payment, kept their mobile phones. A seller was listing a service to update software on mobile phones, I paid for the service and return postage and sent 2 phones to them, after quite some time and a lot of exchanges the seller refunded me but has kept my mobile phones. I have reported this theft to police and they are investigating but they would like more information on the seller but I can't find any way to ask ebay if they will help.
All the routes I find for getting help end with ebay saying as the seller has refunded me they do not want to know about problems, if they would just supply me or the police with a verified name and address it would be very helpful as all I could give the police was an ebay user ID and the address I posted the phones to.

There are several ways to back search an address to obtain the name of the resident. I can do it, you can do it, and the police should certainly be expert in the process, and have access to even more information than a civilian. I think your best bet, however, would be to furnish eBay with a copy of the police report, as previously advised.

Don't you have the seller's or their business name and address in ebay messages, emails, or from the return shipping labels you bought? If you did not save that info you will not be able to get it from ebay.
Since you are located in the U.K. was this an international transaction? If the seller of the service is also in the U.K. you should post about your issue on ebay's U.K. based site's community. ( www.ebay.co.uk ) This is ebay's U.S. based site's community ( ebay.com) I believe the Member to Member board on the U.K. site's community is the equivalent of the Mentor board here.

I had not noticed it was on ebay.com until after I had posted, must have got switched looking for help on ebay.
It sounds like US police operate quite a bit differently to UK police, they have told me that the y cannot confirm any details about the address I gave them and I could only give an ebay user ID and they don't seem inclined to go knock on the door.
