The eBay order details page for tracking is unreliable and potentially harmful to buyers
The eBay order details page for tracking is unreliable and potentially harmful to buyers, as I experienced firsthand today.
Here's what happened:
The seller marked my package as shipped with a provided tracking number.
Clicking the link on eBay took me to FedEx, showing "delivered" on January 4—with a photo of the package on a porch that clearly is not mine.
I spent four hours on FedEx chat and phone (with full documentation), explaining the misdelivery photo. Three agents independently confirmed:
This tracking number does not match my name or address.
They cannot disclose the actual recipient.
The seller likely provided the wrong tracking number, and I must contact them for proof of shipment.
I contacted the seller multiple times - didn't hear back yet.
Compounding this, FedEx notifies me via email or text for incoming packages (via my account), yet I received nothing for this one—further evidence it was not mine.
As a result, eBay's tracking integration leaves buyers entirely dependent on sellers. A seller can input any random tracking number (e.g., from another customer's package), and eBay's page parrots "delivered" without verification, stranding the buyer with no recourse. This created a truly frustrating "day from hell" for me.
When I contacted eBay explaining what happened, here is the gibberish they sent to me. With the link for further help that leads to nowhere.
The tracking information the seller shared shows that the package was delivered. Here are the details:
Since you still haven’t received it, here’s what you can do
- Check around your property. The carrier may have left your package on the porch, inside a garage or shed, or even with a neighbor.
- Check that your shipping address is correct in the order details in your purchase history. Learn more about what to do if there’s a mistake in your shipping address.
- Contact the carrier and let them know you didn’t receive your package.
If you’ve taken these steps and still can’t find your package, get in touch. We’re here to help.
