Tax free purchase
HI, I purchased a scientific instrument that is considered tax free in the State of Rhode Island. The seller is responsible to collect the tax. He told me the EBay would be the best to resolve this issue. I do have a tax free certificate. Is it possible not to pay the taxes? Thank you

Was the shipping address in the State of Rhode Island?

I don't know any details of sales tax collection in the State of Rhode Island but, in general, for sales transactions that are handled on and through eBay, eBay is responsible to calculate and collect sales taxes, and send that sales tax money to the appropriate state's sales tax authority. eBay sellers are generally outside of that particular loop.

Have you notified eBay that you are sales-tax-exempt? And supplied the proper documentation?
In general, though, eBay does not refund sales taxes, except when a purchased item is returned and the purchase price is refunded.

Without eBay knowing that you are sales-tax-exempt for certain items, no, you are (probably) going to pay sales taxes on your eBay purchases.
In the meantime, you might be able to contact Rhode Island's sales tax authorities to request a refund. The state's official website would be the best source.
