Suggestions on how much to bid
I'm new to ebay bidding. When bidding a lower amount, any suggestions on how to determine an appropriate bid. I don't want to offend anyone.

Many veteran bidders suggest deciding in advance how much you are willing to pay in total, taking into account any shipping or sales taxes, then bidding that amount, once, as late in the auction as you are comfortably able to. If the amount is a round number, consider adding a few odd cents to lessen the chances of a tie, which would go to the earlier bidder.
Deciding your maximum early and then bidding late avoids tipping your hand too early or igniting a bidding war. By bidding once, late, you also minimize the chances of running into open transaction limits by having many bids outstanding at the same time which can sometimes prevent further bids.
Your goal in bidding should be to win at the lowest price you can obtain.
Because of the way that eBay auctions work -- the high bidder pays up to one bid increment above the second highest bidder's maximum amount -- bidding less than the maximum amount you are willing to pay only allows you to be outbid and lose to a bid at an amount that you may have been willing to match or beat -- for no apparent benefit.
