Stymied by ebay's adverseness to personal communication!
Summary: rifleman4 received an incorrect item from a purchase made on eBay but is unable to determine the seller's identity due to the lack of a seller ID and the reliance on automated systems. They have been searching their purchase history to resolve the issue but have not found a match from New Jersey. eburtonlab suggested checking the shipping label for clues and using the feedback system to narrow down the possibilities by comparing tracking numbers of transactions awaiting feedback. The high call volume at eBay is making it difficult for rifleman4 to reach customer service.
I received a unknown object from an unknown seller in ebay.
Presumably, he sent the wrong object, not the one I won in an auction.
There is no seller ID included in the package; only a return address to NJ.
I have bought over 100 auctions in the last month.
I tried to go thru them to find any from the state of NJ. It's almost impossible.
I am hoping that an ebay rep will, given the return address, be able to ID the seller so I can let him know he sent the wrong object.
Yet my problem does not fit into any of the usual categories, and I am unable to break thru the automated system to speak to a person who may be able to help.
In 25 years of ebaying, I've never encountered this problem.
Any suggestions?

Mentor2 weeks agoPlease keep in mind that Ebay may not share this information with you. Don't get upset with them if they don't. They are required to protect members, both buyers and sellers. The appropriate response for them to do is contact the seller for you and explain things. Then get their permission to put you in contact with them.
Thank you for being such an honest person, just trying to do the right thing. Much RESPECT !!!

You may be having problems getting a call back due to the current listing problems generating a much higher call volume today.
If you cannot wait for a call back tomorrow -- and I am not entirely certain that eBay customer service will be able to help you track down a seller username based on a return address -- you may want to try a few other things first. Such as examining the shipping label closely for other clues, such as an item number or the tracking number.
Your best bet may be to go to your Purchase History, limit the results to items "ready for feedback" using the button at the top of the list, leave feedback for any you know you have received that are as described, and then compare the tracking number of the package you received to the tracking numbers of the remaining transactions in that sort -- which should be transactions that are marked as delivered but that you have not left feedback for yet.
