Standard envelope headaches
Summary: *sew*what* is experiencing issues with their post office rejecting items mailed using the STANDARD ENVELOPE method, despite following all rules. They mention conflicting information from USPS and eBay about this method. krazzykats and disneyshopper note that only certain items, like trading cards and postcards, qualify for this shipping option, and krazzykats shares their experience with similar issues. comics-scifi-collectibles confirms this with a list of eligible categories and suggests using calculated shipping for non-qualifying items.
My post office routinely returns/rejects my items mailed by STANDARD ENVELOPE, even though I follow all the rules - does anyone else have this problem? USPS says eBay has no right to offer this method; eBay says nothing.

I recommend using buyer pays calculated shipping on your listings. You will need to ship these via ground advantage.

You can use eBay standard envelope to ship trading cards, currency and coins, postcards, stamps, patches, stickers, decals, greeting cards, and seeds. Some of these categories have shipping requirements in addition to the envelope requirements above:

Mentor3 weeks ago@*sew*what* "eBay" is wrong. Items must ONLY be from the select categories. On occasion you may see the option for ESE on items in other categories but that is a programing ERROR.

MentorSep 9, 2026 at 5:40 PM · EditedI sell patterns that can be a bit lumpy, and I do use a stiffener, so they can’t be sent by standard mail.
I’ve considered trying standard mail for them since postage costs for patterns are ridiculously high but do not think they quality.
Have you noticed if its one type of item being rejected, like is it patterns or fabric or ?

MentorSep 9, 2026 at 5:00 PMIt’s really used for sending cards, postcards, letters, and documents, and it’s rectangular in shape.
Unusually shaped mail, like square or vertical envelopes, lumpy envelopes, rigid envelopes, and mail with clasps, string, or buttons, must be hand-canceled.
