SSN Request
eBay frequently requests my SSN, even though I have no tax obligation.
eBay also refuses to allow me to sell items without first surrendering my SSN.
If this is a critically important IRS requirement, why isn't the same request coming from my other sales accounts (Craig's List, Facebook Marketplace, Etsy, etc).?

·2 years agoYou may not any tax obligations now but if you sell you may have and the IRS wants to know about it.
EBay fought long and hard against it but to no avail.
They will be coming for the other sites soon.

Mentor2 years agoPlatforms classified as marketplace facilitators must collect sales tax to forward to the buyers state. When you sell on those other platforms, are they collecting the payment from the buyer and then sending it to the seller? If not, then I don't believe they need to collect your SSN, and therefore each seller is responsible for sending sales tax to the buyers state of residence.
