SSN? Cancel order?
A seller has contacted me telling me the eBay wants their Social Security number, but they are an immigrant and don't have one. They want me to cancel my purchase. What should I do?

·2 years agoOnly the seller can cancel a transaction. S/he needs to give a taxpayer ID number (SSN is one type--non-citizens can get one by filing a form W-7 with the IRS) to get your money from Adyen (eBay's payment contractor) to his/her bank account. *
Do NOT request the seller to cancel your transaction. The problem is his/hers totally and if s/he insists on cancelling s/he should get a "defect" for doing so (if you get a cancellation notice from eBay come back for more advice if it says the reason is anything other than out of stock (and some other language after that).
Have you paid? If not don't let 4 days go by without doing so where s/he can cancel for non-payment--you are protected by the Money Back Guarantee and will either get the item as described or your money back if you follow the right procedures: If you don't get a package from the seller by the time the estimated delivery date you were given when you paid has fully passed, go to your Purchase History for that item, click the link for more options and select that you haven't received the item, then follow instructions from there. If you haven't gotten the item as described or a full refund after 3 days (but before 21 days) from doing so go back and you should find a link to "Ask eBay to step in" to get your refund. If you get a package but the contents are significantly not as described select that you want to return it instead of not received (even if the package is totally empty--save the package to send back if required--do not select item not received) and choose the option that what you received is not what was described or pictures (or however they are wording that these days) and then follow the same procedure of waiting 3 days and "asking eBay to step in." Your deadline for starting either process is 30 days from the estimated delivery date or the actual delivery date, whichever is earlier.
*ETA: eBay will hold the funds until s/he gives the TIN (and sets up payment information e.g. bank account and routing numbers) and s/he is required to ship to you while they hold it. The seller having to wait is NOT your problem to solve.
