@wilcag-63 eBay is required by the federal government to due to the Know Your Customer law to have your SS# on file. It is also needed for the IRS if a 1099k is required.
ebay doesn't do anything with your SSN. ebay uses Managed Payments to keep track of payments, and they report your sales to the IRS when it meets the current threshhold.

Mentor1 month agoeBay keeps the Social Security Numbers (SSNs) of all US-based sellers
in a big computer.
They do not share your SSN, or mine, with any other person or any other company.
IF eBay has to send a report of the money you earn through selling on eBay,
to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or your state's income taxation authority,
eBay will put your name, address, and SSN on that report.

Setting up a seller account:
Verify that the name and address on your eBay account matches your brick and mortar checking account and government ID EXACTLY.
I had to had my middle name to my eBay account so it would match my checking account and drivers license.
You will need to provide your SS#.
You can not use a PO box for your registration address as seller but you can use it for your ship from and to addresses.
