Someone Hacked into Acct - Purchased their own overinflated merch
Husband had his account compromised. They were not able to change the password or lock us out, but because he had never added 2 factor to the login, they were able to get in and make a purchase. It was a basic hot pot and some mugs that were priced at over $800!! So we are assuming that the person that got into his account, was the seller of the overprice merch. He was able to get the password changed before they were able to make another purchase (another hot pot was in the cart about to be checked out! argh!) We tried to cancel the order, but of course the seller refused the cancellation.
We got the confirmation email from ebay (legit -we went into his account to verify it) that the products had been shipped and it shows our home address as the "Shipping To" address. Well, guess what?! It says it was delivered Friday 4/3 and "handed to" us by UPS. We were out of town the whole weekend. So I called UPS with the tracking number (which does say it went to our CITY but doesn't list the address), but the UPS rep said the "recipient address" was not our name or address as was listed on the ebay invoice as the shipping info. I told the UPS person that whoever did this apparently changed the delivery address after-the-fact, to which he responded "well, it doesn't show that they made a change to it online"....well, dear sir. Like they were going to go through the legit proper channels to complete their scam??
So now, if we try and dispute it on Paypal or through the CC company, it shows that the tracking was 'delivered' and 'handed to' the recipient.
What now?? I'm going to try the UPS fraud dept, because if I cannot prove it didn't come to me, then Paypal and our CC company will not likely refund.
It was literally $50 worth of items for over $800.00.
We did report the seller to Ebay. We will write this all up for Ebay, Paypal and our CC company, but I think we've been had.
Any ideas of potential recourse would be much appreciated.

OP4 months agoWe haven't called yet - I need my husband to be the one to call so that there's no confutsion. We will try to call tonight. I tried looking the weight up on the tracking and it's not listed. Most every other package we've recieved has a weight declared. This one just lists 'package'. Strange.
I have made sure that I've used those words. I'm hoping it helps!

OP4 months agoThank you - I have done all the things, and secured all the things, and reported all the things. I also emailed UPS fraud dept. If they can provide me documentation that it was not delivered at our "shipping address" then hopefully if Ebay cannot do anything, it will be enough to convice paypal or my CC company. Wish me luck! I'll update as soon as I hear something.

Mentor4 months ago@redsmom1116 Did you try calling as I suggested? What exactly did they say?
It is important to mention a False Tracking scam wherever you file the claim.
I just remembered that I had saved this info that you might find helpful>
FOR UPS:
You can usually find the weight and other details for UPS here:
https://www.ups.com/track?loc=en_US&requester=ST/
then click " Proof of Delivery"
The proof of delivery may have more details about the delivery site, and the weight. Screenshot that.

Mentor4 months ago@redsmom1116. So sorry that happened. Once you go to your payment method eBay can no longer help you.
You can try contacting Trust and Safety to see if there's anything they can do.
This is the dedicated number for Hacked Accounts: 1-866-961-9253
( customer service agents at this number can only help with account security issues)
Here's my advice to help secure your account:
#1 Run a full scan with your virus software to remove any spyware from your computer.
#2 Go to my eBay> account>personal information and make sure that all information is correct including your cell phone number, registered email and ship from and to addresses.
https://accountsettings.ebay.com/profile
#3 Change your passwords and secret questions. My eBay> account> sign in and security
https://accounts.ebay.com/acctsec/security-center
#4 Secure your email account.
Change the passwords and secret questions. Be sure to use different passwords and secret questions on eBay and your email. Do not use these passwords on any other account.
Hacked accounts often start with a hacked email account.
#5 Calling is the only way to report hacked accounts for security reasons.
This is the dedicated number for Hacked Accounts: 1-866-961-9253

#6 For extra protection consider turning on two-step verification. 3rd option on this page>

#7 Unlink all Social Sign in methods and change your passwords on those accounts too. The hacker will be able to use the social sign in links to sign in to your account again if you do not disconnect this option.

OP4 months agoThank you for the info. I have not gone to Paypal or CC yet - gathering info at the moment. Is there any type of recourse available from Ebay at this point other than reporting the seller? I'm assuming not, but I have never had anything like this happen before. We've secured the account, but are out over $800 on the CC via Paypal. Is there anything else Ebay can do in this instance?

Mentor4 months ago@redsmom1116. You can try reporting it as a false tracking scam. Since it's a combo of a hacked account AND fake tracking I believe that calling Trust and Safety is probably your best option.
Providing the delivery photo may help your case.
This is how false tracking number scams are handled:
Report the seller using this process
https://www.ebay.com/help/action?topicid=4022
Important, select "Suspicious seller activity"
then "Other"
Explain that the seller is using fake USPS tracking numbers
Include these phrases
Seller uploaded tracking not associated with my transaction
Tracking details were not accurate
Seller use a false tracking number
Don't write a novel, it's initially being read by a computer, that's why I want you to use those 3 specific phrases in the message.
3) Finally, contact Customer Service and inform them that the seller uploaded a "false tracking number" on your purchase. Request a refund.
Use the Customer Service that is on social media this way:
https://www.instagram.com/ebay/
Just send a private message to the page. Explain you have a fake or false tracking number situation.
Let me know if you receive a refund from eBay or not.
