Someone created a new eBay account with my email address
Summary: level247 shared a problem about their email address being used to create an unauthorized eBay account. Despite having an eBay account with a similar email, someone used it to register a new account. They are struggling to remove their email from this account since phone verification and authenticator apps are linked to it. Other participants offered advice on filtering unwanted emails in Gmail and discussed how eBay differentiates email addresses. Despite these suggestions, level247 remains concerned about resolving the issue with eBay.
If I had known how many times people would mistype their own email address, I would have chosen something else. I've had so many issues with people creating accounts under my email that it's locked me out of some services.
Just recently, though, while I've already had an ebay account with my email "FirstnameLastname@gmail.com," someone just signed up with "Firstname.Lastname@gmail.com." Google sees both of these as the same email address. But apparently eBay doesn't care; someone has now created a new ebay account using my email address.
Not sure how they were able to get so far. I tried to gain access to the account, but there's already a phone number and authenticator app tied to it, so when I go to change the password, I have to get a text to either the phone number or use the code from the authenticator app.
Ebay chat is useless. It keeps thinking I'm saying someone has hacked my account. No one has. I just have the annoyance of getting emails to this new account now. I can't report it as spam or block the sender, as I also use eBay. I just want to get my email address wiped from the other account.
Does anyone have a similar situation or any way to get actual help?
Also, is this even the right place? I was shown a link to "ask the community" and this is where it took me, and yet all I get for the subject is "Ask a Mentor."

MentorSep 9, 2026 at 9:08 PMIf you use gmail, you should be able to set up a filter that identifies only emails with the firstname.lastname in the header, and send those emails to a folder, skipping your inbox entirely. From one of those emails, click on the three dot menu in the upper right of the email and choose "filter messages like this".
That won't stop the user from using your email address, but at least you won't see those messages in your inbox.
I doubt eBay will actually help you force the seller to provide another email address. If eBay wanted to force users to provide a valid email address, eBay could require users to respond to an email sent to that address as a condition of registering an account, but eBay apparently chooses not to do that.

OPSep 9, 2026 at 9:28 PMI've already gotten a filter like that set up since this kind of thing has happened multiple times. I still check that folder just incase someone actually sends me an email to that address. But I always try to fix the issues when I can so I don't get flooded with two types of spam folders. Many times I can go in and just update the address to something else, but ebay has locked accounts down hard. Just hoping they realize their mistake and fix it. Many times I just assume they create a new account with their real email address.

MentorSep 9, 2026 at 9:08 PMThere is little eBay can do about this since each account must have a separate unique email address. Unfortunately as far as eBay is concerned an email address ending in gmail and gamil are two different addresses so they are two different accounts even though google may think they are the same user.
