Sold item not as described, buyer disappointed.
Summary: hadd0404 sold an item with an inaccurate description and contacted the buyer to offer a cancellation and refund. The buyer was disappointed and accused hadd0404 of backing out. Concerned about future claims on eBay, hadd0404 sought advice. comics-scifi-collectibles advised canceling the order citing it as out of stock or damaged, explaining the implications for seller's fees and the importance of having a backup payment method. hadd0404 thanked them and confirmed the order was canceled.
I just sold an item that had an inaccurate description. Before mailing I contacted the buyer explaining the error. They said they were very disappointed. I let them know that I can cancel the item since it was inaccurately described and refund their money. They accused me of trying to back out of the sale. Now I’m wondering if I should cancel the sale now and refund the money. My concern is that they can claim the description was inaccurate through eBay once they receive the item and then it becomes an issue as eBay will require me to pay for return shipping and refund them the entire purchase price plus the shipping they initially paid. This will cost me a bit of time and money if they put in that claim and potentially also mean the item may not even be returned. Any guidance is appreciated.

You should cancel the order as out of stock/ damaged. You do receive a defect for having to use this reason. Be careful not to get more defects as they seriously hurt your account.
You get your sellers fees back except for the .40 cents listing fee.
This is how refunds work>>
Refunds, even for order cancellations, come out of your available funds not pending or held. If you do not have available funds then eBay charges your back up payment method for selling costs.
Have you entered your backup payment method for selling costs here: https://ppcapp.ebay.com/myppc/wallet/list Select Manage under the method you want to use then select Preferred for selling costs. I use a credit card.
Once you issue the refund and the buyers funds are released from being held or finish processing then the buyers payment is released to you.
