sold item, it arrived broken, help!
I sold an espresso machine last week, it arrived to the buyer incredibly damaged. It is very heavy and expensive. how can I go about resolving this issue for the buyer without losing money.

You are going to lose at least the shipping. Did you put additional insurance on your shipment? If not, the carrier is only going to pay you $100 insurance.
Ask the buyer for photos of the item and the box including the packing materials that you used, then ask them to open a return request. I assume you do not want to pay for return shipping if the item is that severely damaged, so go to the request and click refund buyer now. Ask the buyer to hold the box and machine - they may have to take it to their PO for inspection.
File an insurance claim here - https://www.usps.com/help/claims.htm
The buyer does not have to wait for your claim for their refund - you want to refund before eBay has to do it so that your fees are refunded by eBay.
