I have been selling items of and on ebay for the past 12 years. Now ebay is requiring my social security number before they release the funds from my sale. However, I am very reluctant to do so over the internet because I have been a victim of personal identity theft and fraud. Do you think that it is safe for my to do so? Is anyone aware of any options that I could use to accomplish the same goals???

In order to sell on Ebay you must provide the required information.

You are required to provide your social security number in two situations: (both apply to Ebay's Managed Payments)

You are doing something that is reportable to the IRS or your stateâ€™s tax department; and/or
You are engaged in a financial transaction that is subject to the Customer Identification Program. This is a provision of the USA Patriot Act which requires financial institutions to verify your identity.
