I live on the east coast of Florida. I once sold an item to someone on the west coast of Florida (about a 4 hour drive). The package left the state of Florida, took a tour of several states, eventually ending up in Ohio. Then it made it’s way back and eventually to my buyer.
A couple of years ago, I sold something to someone in N. Carolina. The package instead went to Texas and then back to me.
I’ve had packages take a leisurely tour of Florida before even getting an acceptance stand, then onward to the buyer.
As @comics-scifi-collectibles stated, USPS frequently does strange things with packages.
@superg2715 USPS has been doing some strange rerouting of packages.
You can try reaching out to the seller if the item is past due and ask if they will file a missing mail search. It's best that the seller does this since they can described the package.
If the item is very late arriving and the seller doesn't assist you then you will need to file a refund request.

Look for the last estimated delivery date in your purchase history. You can file a refund request when it is one day PAST the last estimated delivery date . If tracking shows movement I recommend waiting a week or so for postal service delays.
You have 30 days from the last estimated delivery date to file a refund request on eBay.

If it is more than 30 days past the last estimated delivery date then you can file a refund request on PayPal up to 180 days from the date of purchase. OR if you didn't use PayPal at checkout contact your bank or credit card to report that you didn't receive the item.
