Shipping Nightmare

Pretty much new to eBay, embarrassed by some of my ignorance, so when posting something for sale, I just selected whatever eBay proposes for shipping, not realizing that I need to put in weights dimensions, etc.
So I listed something, a rocking horse that obviously is about 2 feet high and 2 to 3 feet long. It weighs at least 16 pounds. Did not realize that the shipping says $7.67 which the Buyer paid now I have to ship it at my cost. What/ which is the best way to ship it so it has the least impact on my profit.
Going forward how do I place shipping accordingly to what I’m selling?
Also I have listed something for $12 that weighs 8oz and the shipping cost to the Buyer was so much in my mind. I think it was close to nine to $10…bottom line is after buying the shipping label on eBay. I profit $1.82. How do I correct this? I’m doing something wrong.

Mentor1 week agoFirst ignore any eBay recommendation for shipping charges. These recommendations are based on category averages and not the exact item you have.
So you need to use calculated shipping and enter the dimensions and weight of the packaged ready to ship item. This way the shipping charge will take into account shipping to the buyers location in addition to the weight and dimensions.

Personally if I have an item that is too large or heavy to ship via USPS then I use UPS and buy the label from Pirateship. Pirateship helps with insurance claims and surcharge disputes. UPS does have a list of valid surcharges on their website too. UPS does not add surcharges as often as Fed Ex does.

OP1 week agoReally appreciate your input. You’ve given me some insight and avenues to go on. Just purchased two large boxes from Home Depot going to pack it up and probably go to UPS and ship it or look into that other ship insight you mentioned. Again, thank you for your input.

Mentor1 week ago · Edited@denic6 Ups will cost less at Pirateship than at the ups store. It's going to be very expensive to ship due to dimensional weight. Be sure to measure and weigh accurately, round up to the next full inch.

Mentor1 week ago@denic6 The shipping is most likely going to cost over a hundred due to the size of the box need to protect the horse for shipping.
Your only other option is not a good one which is to cancel the sale as OUT OF STOCK. Apologize to the buyer before you cancel so hopefully they won't leave negative feedback.
When you cancel as out of stock you get a DEFECT on your account which seriously hurts the health of your account.
You will get your sellers fees back except for the .40 cents transaction fee.
