Shipping Method ESE Not Available - No Warning Until After Order Placed
Summary: mfhbusiness experienced a problem with their first sale on eBay involving the 'Vintage Sports Memorabilia > Ticket Stubs' category, which doesn't support eBay's Standard Envelope (ESE) shipping. Despite initially selecting ESE during the listing process, they were unable to use it post-sale. wooden_flower advised that the category cannot be changed after sale and suggested either shipping in a plain envelope or cancelling the order, both options carrying risks. They also recommended reviewing eligible categories for future listings.
I got my first sale. 3 ticket stubs from the Baseball HoF. Celebration - short lived.
It turns out that 'Vintage Sports Memorabilia > Ticket Stubs' are not eligible for ESE, despite it being indisputably sized and weighted for a standard enveloped, and only $5.00. During listing creation, despite setting the category first, the shipping section allowed me to select my standard ESE policy.
Managing the order, I discover ESE is disabled. The only reasonable option the UI presents to me is 'cancel the order'. Do I have to start my account with a bad review? What an unsavory experience.
Can I alter the category post-sale to enable ESE? I don't see a method to do so, but what's my recourse?

You cannot change the category on an ended listing.
If you cancel the sale, you will have to select I am out of stock/I can’t complete the order, giving yourself a defect for the cancellation, as well as chancing the negative feedback.
I don’t know why eBay let you select ESE if the category is not eligible, but it did, so you’ll want to review the eligible categories by downloading the full path list here -

For this order, if it was me, I would ship in a plain envelope with a stamp. If you have an honest buyer, and they receive the item, they will be happy. A less honest member may say never received, so you will have to issue a full refund.
There’s going to be a few gotcha lessons when you start selling here, $5 is not a bad loss for such a lesson.

OP1 month agoI did just that, communicated with the buyer and had a great convo about the item's history. It worked out well, barring a shipping transit mishandle. Thanks!
