Shipping label charge is more than the calculated USPS Ground Adv. Amount
As always, I entered accurate weight, dimensions when creating the listing. eBay USPS shipping was indicated to be $4.51 which was collected from buyer when sold. In Order Details the price of shipping label increased to $5.37. Why? Chatbot's answer: "We recommend working with the carrier to come to a resolution on this unexpected shipping charge. We calculate costs based on the weight and dimensions you provide, so be sure the information is accurate." Me: It was, and there was no mention of postage $ due when it was dropped off (and weighed) at P.O. Is the post office and eBay linked to do up-charges for insufficient postage (tho it should not have been). Trying to understand the mechanism here.

is it possible you set the item to a flat rate of $4.51? The system is not calculating shipping on that item - it shows me $4.51 no matter what zip code I enter.

OP7 months agoIt's possible. It's been a long time since I made the listing, and it's the only time this has happened. Maybe I did something differently. I guess I'll chock this up to new seller experience and be extra careful going forward.

Cannot see on closed listing what dimensions were entered. Not-too-weird padded envelope dimensions tho. It shouldn't matter should it? Wouldn't the P.O. ask me to make up any difference if an issue? And if not, how would eBay know to charge more than the original spec. Are they connected for that? I made no changes, and just clicked on "shipping label" from the notification to print.

OP7 months agoOP here. Further investigating shows that this has nothing to do with the post office. A "Shipment Details" email summarizes the higher charge. But why? Seems like I'm missing something obvious.

Mentor7 months agoAs posted, it looks like you put a flat rate charge on the listing so that was the charge to the buyer no matter what the actual cost was.
You can check this by clicking on relist (just don't actually post it) and see what was set in the shipping section.

OP7 months agoThanks for the insight. That's a neat trick to see shipping settings that I hadn't considered. If only chatbot could have given me the actual reason (after I did specify the listing in question) rather than blaming the carrier. Ah real humans to the rescue. Thank you reply-ers.
