Shipping Insurance Claims
Hello,
If I had a USPS Priority Mail package that was lost or damaged (I think it's two different things for USPS), and I file a claim, what do I use for values?
If it's lost I read they will pay for the value of the item and the shipping, but if damaged they supposedly only pay for the item value?
EXAMPLE: Buyer buys item for $60 + $20 shipping. I pay $20 shipping USPS Priority so there is $100 of insurance. I have to file a claim because the package is a) Lost or b) Arrives damaged.
Do I put the value at $60 (value of item) or $80 (total cost buyer paid)? I don't want to lose money on the deal or get overpaid. Does USPS insurance claim cover the value of the item PLUS the paid shipping?? Do they say "we will reimburse you for the item value stated PLUS the paid shipping, or do they assume the item value includes the shipping paid?
Thank you

OP3 years agoI think I may have figured this out- you submit the "item value" for the total sale price as that amount will be refunded to the buyer. Then USPS should also reimburse me for the postage I paid to ship the item so that the buyer gets all of their payment back, and I get my money back that I paid for shipping.
If you don't include the shipping etc. you charged the buyer, when you refund them you will be at a loss for the shipping.
