Shipping costs
What do you do when the item purchased is $17, the buyer is only paying $8 for shipping and the shipping cost is $20?

As a new Seller you ship the item and pay for your mistake out of pocket.
If you mean the copper pot that just sold that has NO dimensions on the listing anywhere then you made a mistake on the listing when you created it. You have to figure out what you did wrong and don't make that mistake again in the future. I am on the East coast and see that shipping to me for $ 9.02 which I know is not right.
Use the Sell Similar feature on the drop down menu on that item and review the shipping section to make sure you had the correct weight AND box dimensions to ship that item in. Once you figure out the error use the Save for later choice at the bottom of the page, the item will be moved to your Draft file, go there next and delete the listing so you don't accidentally Relist it again.
Really sorry that happened but we see most mistakes of this nature with new Sellers.
