Why are sellers allowed to charge $100.00 for an item that weighs less than 4 pounds?

Ebay does not control how much a seller charges for any item they may sell or the shipping they may charge. That is totally in control of the seller.
Fortunately as a buyer if you don't like either of those things, you can move on to a seller you prefer their pricing.
Now there is the occasion that the seller may have made an error in pricing the shipping. You can always send the seller a polite message just to verify the amount. I know over the years, as a seller, I certainly have made that mistake a couple of times.

OP11 months agoEbay used to have a section where you could file a complaint on a seller that is obviously price gouging on shipping charges, but now I can't find it. I hope nobody is dumb enough to pay $100.00 shipping for a 3 pound bag of cat food. Thanks for your time.

Mentor11 months agoThat is completely up to a buyer. The buyer is in control of that.
It all depends on where the item is shipping from and to. Would you mind giving me a link to the listing so I could take a peek.

The top one is for has free shipping. As does the second one. Maybe the sellers discovered their errors and corrected them.

OP11 months agoI just clicked on both listings again and they both still say $100.00 shipping. I found the ebay area to report this type of abuse. Thanks for your time.

Mentor11 months agoSince eBay charges their Final Value Fee (commission) on the total amount that the buyer pays they no longer care how the item and shipping are charged. Sellers used to be able to only pay the commission on the item price so they would charge a small amount for the item and a large amount for shipping to cheat eBay. eBay got wise and now charges their commission on the total paid by the buyer so the seller cannot cheat eBay.

Mentor11 months agoIt isn't abuse on Ebay anymore. So reporting them will not do anything as it isn't something Ebay will care about because of how they charge selling fees. A seller can post something that the product is $10 and the shipping is $50, Ebay doesn't care. Because the seller could post something for $60 and the selling fees are the same.
Seller are charged selling fees by the ENTIRE amount a buyer pays, which also includes shipping and sales tax if appropriate.
