If the package can be intercepted, you can ship the right item, and let the buyer know it is going to be late.
If the intercept isn’t available, alert the buyer to the problem, and ask them to open a not as described return as soon as the package arrives. Your best option is to refund when returned, then relist the item and the buyer can purchase it again - perhaps offer them a little discount for the delay.
