Shipper damaged item beyond repair
I sold a passenger car door to a buyer. ebay only offered one option for shipping - UPS Ground. I purchased the label, boxed it up and delivered it to the UPS store. During transit, it was damaged beyond repair. The buyer's pictures indicate it was either driven over by the delivery truck or attacked with a sledge hammer. UPS has directed me to ebay, as their contract is with ebay. ebay's representative attempted to guide me top file a claim with UPS, but the UPS automated system will not accept it because my phone number was not registered with UPS at the time of shipping. The ebay representative does not know how to clear this hurdle. ebay's formal response is that I am responsible for the condition of the item up to and including the point of delivery. Being that I did not select the shipper, contract with the shipper or pay the shipper directly, how do I have any control over the condition of the item once it has left my hands? Apparently, I have no recourse with UPS, either. Right now I am out $300 and my buyer has a car door to dispose of. Is there any department at ebay that handles this type of dispute resolution?
