Shill bidding and sniping services are two unrelated things. This is what eBay says about shill bidding:

If you think that another member is shill bidding, you don't need to report it to us. eBay has a number of systems in place to detect and monitor bidding patterns and practices. If we identify any malicious behavior, we'll take steps to prevent it.
Sniping means bidding at the last possible moment. Bidders can do this themselves or use a sniping service. This is allowed on eBay and is a good strategy for winning more auctions. Alternatively, just bid your max as late in the auction as you can, and allow eBay to continue bidding for you, using just enough of your max to keep you in the lead (unless/until someone bids more than your max).
Many buyers think sellers charge too much for shipping when in fact shipping is outrageously expensive now. USPS has had about three rate hikes each year for several years now. When you shop for an item, look at the total price of the item (price + shipping) to determine whether to buy or not. The closer the seller is located to you, the less the shipping usually is.

OP7 months agoAbsolute nonsense. STD mail shipping is often sufficient and quite inexpensive still. My post had nothing to do with sniping. Read before you reply. EBay needs to crack down on all this nefarious blatant rampant seller scamming going on everywhere. It’s out of control.

Mentor7 months agoYour post mentioned paid shilling services which was confusing as there are paid sniping options that are commonly complained about on these boards. It is logical to think you meant this as I myself have never heard of a paid shilling service so I thought the same thing as the original poster who responded that you were referring to sniping and simply used the wrong term as that commonly happens.
I will agree that shipping hurts..but it hurts as seller as well. The prices have practically doubled in the time I've been a seller and it makes making a profit hard. Definitely hurts the market on the cheaper items or heavier items.

I did read your post before replying and along with @myangelandmyprincess , I've never heard of a paid shilling service (as shill bidding is a crime).

The retail rate for a 4 oz. package shipped across the country via Ground Advantage costs $8.75 (this is the economy rate - there is no shipping service offered called STD mail shipping). A 3 lb. package costs $20.75. Maybe not to you, but to me and my buyers, that is considered quite costly.
I agree with you that scamming exists (eBay has over 2 billion active listings that are changing every second), however not so much in the three areas you mentioned in your original post.

OP7 months agoAnother enormous unaddressed issue is sellers knowingly selling obviously broken and non working items and listing them as ‘untested’ to increase their price on ambiguous junk. This should not be allowed. Scams and scammers everywhere on this platform. Just horrible and hard to purchase on now. 😞
