Sent an offer of an item and was countered at price that was $10.00 above listed price. Why?
First, I want to say I have been on eBay since the 1990's and have had my whole decades long reviews wiped out after a hiatus of selling and purchasing (between 400 and 500 reviews). Out of rebellion that this happened, I have stayed off of eBay for the last couple of years. I reached out to the seller community yesterday after being told be a rep. that I had a third phone number (which I don't) attached to my account. The community sellers said my eBay account may have been hacked at some point and that is probably the reason my decades long work on eBay had been wiped out. Anyway, I updated my account yesterday as I had spotted an item I was very interested in purchasing. Since I was a seller for years so I am not a total novice to eBay rules. Maybe there are new rules in place of which I have no familiarity now though.
I had been "watching" an item for days. I had the prices in my head. The seller had four of the same product listed at four different prices. The same wording was on each auction listing. I sent an offer of $70.00 for an item that was listed as $77.00. The seller countered with an offer several dollars above his initial asking price. I have never heard of countering at higher than listed prices at the time of your offer. When I reviewed the auction listings today, the seller had changed all four listing prices to higher prices. I sent the seller a message asking why, but have not heard back. Is this a new practice? Why even ask for an offer on the auction if you raise the price above listing prices. Do you think this is a tactic used because I have a zero history now and the seller is wary? Could anyone please explain. Thank you very much!

Mentor2 years agoIt is not suspicious when a seller raises the price in a counter offer. Since the item is in auction format, the seller is hoping to get higher prices than the minimum bid.

OP2 years agoThe seller raised his Buy It Now price and not a minimum bid. The counter offer was for $10.00 more than his Buy It Now price. I found it odd.

Mentor2 years agoWhy would you offer $10 more than the Buy It Now price? Just click the Buy It Now, and you would have saved the $10 and ended the listing. So now that the seller knows there is someone interested, s/he decided to raise the Buy It Now price, which is allowed.

Mentor2 years agoYou opened this account in 2021, so if you have been a member for years, you have another account as well. Log out and try signing into that account (either with the user name if you remember it or when the email address you would have attached to it).
A (not-very-customer-friendly) seller might send a ridiculous counter offer in response to an insulting offer. It doesn't sound like that applies here. You could submit another offer and see what happens.
