Selling a laptop with a shady past -- or not
I bought a laptop on Ebay in 2019. Last week, I did a clean install and when it started up, it reported that it was being managed by a company in Portland, OR. Thinking the laptop may have been stolen, I attempted to contact the company, but it went out of business in 2021.
I contacted my local police department's electronic crimes division and they said they believed the computer was not stolen as the company would have remotely locked it down if it had gone missing. I contacted Apple and they said the only agency that can unlock the computer is the company that no longer exists.
At this point, the computer is only good for parts, so my question is: can I sell this on Ebay as long as I disclose its past? Or would I be in trouble for selling a possibly stolen computer?
