Seller won’t compensate
Summary: wavoconqueso expressed frustration over a defective ceiling fan purchased from a merchant, highlighting that they incurred additional costs for installation, only to discover the defect. The merchant offered a refund for the product but refused to cover installation costs. wavoconqueso is considering small claims court. Responses pointed out that typically sellers are only obligated to refund the product price, not extra expenses; however, wavoconqueso remained dissatisfied with this response, expressing skepticism about advice perceived as biased toward merchants.
What are you do about a merchant who sells you a product that turns out to be a dud that you had to pay someone to install? But the thing is the only way to find out if it is a dud is to install it. I paid $95 to install a ceiling fan that turned out to be that dud. The merchant thinks their responsibility ends with a refund of the product and not the labor needed to find out if it was defective. They refused to accept responsibility for my loss and maintain that they can’t do anything more. Maybe I should take them to small claims court. I’m not sure, but I think they have to show a presence in court or else lose the case. Does anybody know more about this?

OP3 weeks agoThat’s fine. I won’t use Bay in the future just like I quit PayPal 4or5 years ago. I don’t need you.

Mentor1 month agoThe seller is only responsible for up to the amount that you paid for the item. They are not responsible for any installation costs. Even if you went back to your payment source for a charge back that is all you would get.

OP1 month ago · EditedI believe your opinion is based on the fact that you’re a merchant and not a consumer and therefore in MY opinion you’re wrong.

OPAug 16, 2026 at 3:37 AMThe fact that they refunded the price immediately says they had no confidence in the product. They should have never put it in the market.

MentorAug 16, 2026 at 4:10 AM · EditedThe seller is responsible for refunding you for the price of item + shipping only according to Ebay's Money Back Guarantee for buyers. That is fact.

OPAug 16, 2026 at 6:06 AMThank you for being EBay’s and this merchant’s free defender. I didn’t take you on as my mentor and therefore I’m disregarding your comment as unwelcome unethical dogma.

MentorAug 16, 2026 at 6:39 AMI am not taking sides, I am merely presenting the FACT that according to the Ebay MBG, you are entitled to a full refund including the shipping charges you paid. That's all.
If you wish to pursue the matter of the installation cost legally with the seller, you can obtain advice from legal counsel.
Good luck.

So advice/answers that agree with your opinion are welcome, but facts are unwelcome?

Mentor1 month ago@wavoconqueso I am sorry that the ceiling fan is defective. eBay policy is that the seller has to refund the original sale amount and out bound shipping.
It is not possible for a seller to refund more than the sale price.
