SELLER SENT A PRODUCT WITH SERIAL NUMBER, YEAR AND SPECIFICATIONS DIFFERENT FROM THOSE ADVERTISED
The seller listed a MacBook Air 2017 (model A1466) in good cosmetic condition, with no dents, no visible scratches, and a fully functional operating system.
However, the product I received is completely different from what was described. It arrived with visible dents on the lid and edges, scratches on the case, a damaged “C†key, no operating system installed, and — most concerning — a loose screw stuck between the keyboard and the chassis, which caused additional physical damage.
Furthermore, the serial number of the item in the listing is FVFY4PA3J1WK, while the serial number of the item I received is C02LW9WBFSV8 — clearly showing that this is not the same MacBook that was advertised.
After checking the serial number of the MacBook I received on Apple’s official website, it appears to correspond to an early 2013/2014 model, not a 2017 as advertised. The warranty expiration date shown by Apple is February 19, 2015, which strongly suggests that this unit is much older than described in the listing.
When I tried to power it on, the MacBook overheated quickly, and the cooling fan did not turn on (no ventilation noise at all), indicating internal hardware issues that were not disclosed in the listing.
I want to clarify that I only opened the package after arriving in Brazil. The MacBook was carried in my hand luggage, handled carefully the entire time. Other electronics transported in the same bag arrived in perfect condition, proving that the damage did not occur during transport.
Given all of this, it’s clear that the item I received does not match the listing, either in appearance or in functionality.
Since returning the item from Brazil to the U.S. is not practical, I am requesting a fair partial refund, as I intend to take the MacBook to an authorized or specialized repair service here in Brazil to assess the issues and see what can be done. The repair may involve a significant cost, considering the hardware and cosmetic problems.
Attached are photos showing:
- The original listing;
- The MacBook I received (with visible serial number);
- The physical damage and the loose screw;
- The difference between the serial numbers;
- The Apple warranty check result;
- And the purchase invoice.
I kindly ask eBay to review my case carefully, as it is clear that the item delivered is different and in much worse condition than what was advertised.

We are not customer service - we are members like you.
The seller has a right to request that the item be returned, and must pay for the return shipping, but only from the point of delivery. So if you took delivery in the US, you must get someone in the US to help you make the return. You would have to pay to ship it from Brazil to the US.
Have you tried contacting the seller? If you are willing to keep the item for a partial refund, he might be agreeable to that instead of return. I would try that first, but don't mention the difficulty in returning - he doesn't need to know that before making his decision.
