seller returned an item that was not the same as the one I sent.
Summary: traveling37 shared an issue where a buyer returned a 4K player that seemed to have been swapped with defective parts, despite being sold with disclosed issues. The returned unit had new problems, like unresponsive touch controls and an inability to read discs, although the serial number matched. traveling37 reported the buyer to a platform and issued a refund, but is seeking additional advice on handling the situation.
A seller bought my 4k player that was working fine and was tested to work and played dvds and 4k discs just fine and all the controls worked. The only issue with the unit was that the disc drive door that open up to allow the tray to come out would not close back up after the tray goes in. This issue was fully disclosed in the auction. A day after the player was delivered, he filed a return request stating that dvd door was damaged. I sent him a message stating that it was disclosed in the auction and that I was going to accept the return anyways despite that fact. I got the unit back after a week and did the usual testing and verifying to make sure I got the same unit back. Unfortunately, I noticed right away that the controls on the unit was unresponsive to touches ( it's got touch control buttons), and the disc drive wouldn't read 4k disc anymore. The serial numbers checked out and there were no visible damage to the unit to account for any other damage to the unit besides the one that I disclosed in the auction. My feeling is that this seller " swapped out" the drive with his defective drive and sent back that drive. I usually put a tamper proof sticker on any electronics I sell but not this one unfortunately. Are there any other recourse I can take besides reporting this buyer for this "scammy" behavior to ebay? I already gave him a refund after reporting this buyer to ebay knowing that they will want me to give him a refund anyways. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm sorry this happened to you.
In a case like this, it all depends on the Seller's return policy in that listing.
If you are Top Rated and offer 30-day returns or are Above Standard and offer 30-day free returns, you would be eligible to deduct up to 50% of the refund if the item is returned in a different condition.
Sellers who do not offer returns do not have that option.
It's good you reported the Buyer. Going forward, you might consider offering returns in the event this were to happen again.
