Seller Questions – Fees, Protections, and Shipping for High-Value Item
Good evening,
I’m considering listing a high-value thermal optic on eBay and wanted to better understand a few details before moving forward, as this would be my first time selling an item in this price range on the platform.
First, could you clarify the total seller fees I should expect (including final value and payment processing fees) for an item in the ~$2,500–$3,000 range?
Second, I’d like to understand what protections are in place for sellers. Specifically, in the event a buyer claims an item is not functioning or “not as described,” how does eBay handle those situations—especially when the item was fully functional and accurately described prior to shipment? I want to ensure I’m protected against potential misuse or damage after delivery.
Third, what are the recommended best practices for shipping high-value electronics? Does eBay provide guidance or protection options (such as insurance, signature confirmation, or preferred carriers) to help ensure safe delivery and protect both parties?
I can provide detailed documentation, photos, and video proof of the item’s condition and functionality prior to shipment, but I’d like to fully understand the platform’s policies and protections before listing.
I appreciate your time and any guidance you can provide.
Thank you,
-Flynt

1) my first advice is this: sell some other things on eBay to learn the system before you list a high value item.
Try some things you have around the house - CDs, trading cards, anything new in the package you didn't use
2) Final Value Fees are 13.6% of Price + Shipping + Taxes plus .40. This includes the payment processing.
So $3000 * .136 = $408 - but it will be higher because of shipping and taxes.
There are no other fees other than optional listing upgrades.

3) If the buyer claims the item is not as described, you will have to accept the return, pay return shippin, and refund the buyer 100% of what they paid. If you earn Top Rated Seller status (takes 100+ sales) then you have a bit more protection.

4) Insurance is for the seller, you will have an option to buy additional shipping insurance when you buy your shipping label.
5) Items over $750 require signature confirmation. You will be able to buy this service when you buy the shipping label.
