Seller Protection For Lost Items
I need help understanding how seller protection works with lost packages.
1. Item was sold and shipped to buyer with additional insurance.
2. Item went missing after being scanned into USPS system.
3. After a couple of weeks buyer was refunded full amount of order ($300).
(At this point I have no funds from order or the goods sold).
The first agent I spoke with stated that I would need to contact USPS and file a claim with them and to call back once this has taken place and they would activate seller protection and refund me the order amount ($300).
4. Claim was filed with USPS (Proof of insurance and order total from eBay provided).
I call eBay support back and notify them that the claim has been filed, the second agent states that they will now refund me the full amount of the order ($300). 2 Days later I reveive a refunded amount of $26 from the same claim amount. (???)
5. Days later I receive a claim update from USPS stating they would only cover part of the amount ($100).
I call eBay support back and the third agent apologies and states the previous agent mispoke and eBay will not be fullfilling any seller protection and that this needs to happen on USPS's side.
I inform them I've been following their instructions explicitly and USPS will only be offering a fraction of the claim. ($100)
The third agent states that they will send this information over to USPS so they will release the full amount of the claim, I informed them that USPS has already decided on the case and will only be releasing $100. The agent says they will contact eBay on my behalf regarding the difference.
At this point I have no idea who is offering what degree of protection. What I thought I understood was that if I had purchased shipping through eBay with insurance and a package was scanned into a carrier's system that eBay would be issuing a refund if the package was lost.
Any help here is greatly appreciated.

Mentor10 months agoSince you printed the label using ebay, the USPS is responsible for refunding due to a lost package. You said you paid extra for insurance coverage over the $100 coverage, so the USPS should cover that as well.

OP10 months agoThis is where it doesnt make sense. I spoke with USPS today and they said that the insurance is on eBays side not USPS, they said they paid out $100 wich is the max covered by Priority shipping and that any additional refunds would be covered by eBay.
Both eBay and USPS keep pointing the finger at each other, but at the end of the day I'm the one taking the hit, this is the type of scenario I would imagine happening if I had never purchased additional insurance.
