Seller hiked price, won’t answer questions
I’ve been on eBay since the beginning, buying and selling thousands of times, and this is a first for me.
I purchased a pair of shoes via Buy It Now from what appears to be a retailer. It’s difficult to find shoes in my size, let alone ones that fit well, so I wanted a second pair. I really loved the shoes and wore them for walking with my family while on vacation.
I went to the previous auction and clicked on Buy Again. I placed the item in my cart with the intend to pay for it after I drove home from vacation.
Less than 48 hours later, I went to pay for the item, and the price was— without exaggeration— double what it had been!
I looked and there was indeed a coupon or special offer or something from the seller, saying “up to 75 percent offâ€, and it was selected, but toggling it on or off made no difference in the price.
I sent the seller a message inquiring what had gone wrong. It’s been a week and I haven’t received a reply. There is nothing indicating the seller is away or unable to fulfill orders.
Any ideas what happened? Was I lucky that I got one pair of shoes from what may be a scam artist? Software glitch that the seller will hopefully rectify? Should I cut ties with the seller because of both the deceptive price increase and the lack of communication?

It’s possible that buying the shoes the first time alerted the seller to to fact the shoes were priced incorrectly … so the seller adjusted the price … having no idea at all about your interest in another pair.
If you received the first pair at the price you paid … there is no scam. You were not guaranteed the same price a second time.

Mentor3 years agoSellers are not required to answer questions, though many sellers will, of course.
Sellers are allowed to raise their prices on unsold items. Putting an item in a cart does not reserve an item or prevent the seller from editing the listing or changing the price. Unless you commit to a purchase by requesting an invoice, the seller has no idea that an item is in your cart at all.
