Seller cancellation
Seller has contacted me indicating that they are out of inventory of the item I purchased. And has suggested that I cancel the order and request a refund. Inventory restocking will take 7 to 9 weeks.
Your thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You can't cancel the order. A buyer can only request that the seller cancel the order. When a seller cancels an order, he has to choose the reason from a short list. In this case, if the seller chooses Out Of Stock, eBay tags a Defect onto his account. But, if the buyer requests the cancellation, the seller can choose Buyer Request and he does not get a Defect. That's why the seller wants you to ask for the cancellation, instead of going ahead and doing it himself.
Your main options are (1) Make the request, and let him off the hook. You get a refund and the seller does not get a Defect. (2) Do nothing, for now. The seller will either cancel or let the clock run, and when the item doesn't arrive, you open an Item Not Received for a refund. The seller gets a Defect. (3) Message the seller that you expect to receive the listed item in the specified time. This is hardball. He can't send it of course, but your message lays the foundation to report the seller IF he lies and says that you requested the cancellation. I think the seller will recognize this.

Often when a Seller suggests that the Buyer cancel the order, it's because the Seller doesn't want to take the hit to their account for being out of stock. Instead they want you to take the hit.
You can let the Seller know that you still want what you paid for and do not want to cancel. If they go ahead and cancel and blame you, report them to eBay. If their messages get aggressive, report the messages.
If you do not receive your item by the estimated delivery date, open an Item Not Received refund request on eBay.
