Seller canceled order
The seller canceled the order and sent me a message saying they didn't have it in stock. I get another message from eBay saying they canceled it because I asked them to. Is this ethical? Are they trying to make their numbers look better or something by blaming me, or is this the only option they have for when they don't have it in stock?
Many thanks for your time and consideration

They did that in order to avoid the defect on their selling account. Unethical.
You can report the seller:
https://www.ebay.com/help/action?topicid=4022
Select "The seller has violated one of eBay’s policies"
Then "Seller doesn’t want to complete the sale"
In the details, you can specify that you did NOT request the cancellation.
