Seller asking for me to pay for shipping before cancelling my order
I requested to cancel an order a few minutes after placing it and the seller is telling me they will do so if I cover shipping they already paid for. My understanding, however, is that ebay refunds sellers for unshipped orders. Can anyone advise on this?

Your understanding is incorrect. However, the seller can void the shipping label if he hasn't used it. He may not know how. Instructions are at this link if you want to give it to him:
