Seller accepted return request, but then, refunded me fully. Now, I can’t find my return label.
I did a wrong item return request the same day as delivery after receiving an item I didn’t pay for.
I paid for a rare item and got a regular one instead. Listing title and description said I would receive a rare item. Shipping package was unharmed, but the box the item came in was opened at the bottom. Filmed the unboxing which was just me pulling out the blind bag and card from the bottom of the box. I took some pictures as well. Though I did not open the blind bag the item came in, the card it comes with lets you what item you have which let me know I have the wrong item. Funny enough, based off the card in the box, the item I received is the same one I got from the actual store’s online website - I got the same item I didn’t want twice. So, the item was authentic, just not what I paid all that money for. I can send it all back the way it came, but the seller said they don’t do returns and did not want it back. I read on multiple forums online that EBay doesn’t care about that, so that’s why I did the return request anyway. The seller wanted to give me a few dollars back and I declined that. I wanted a full refund and a way to send the item back.
A few days later, seller accepted the return request and a few minutes later, I received a full refunded. Now, I just needed to get a return label to send this thing back. I checked my email, couldn’t find it. Talked to the automated chat system, was told to check messages and still couldn’t find it. Told the seller this and they said there’s nothing they could do about that. Searched all over the web for some help, called all the customer service numbers I could find and couldn’t get past the automated voice. Looked at community posts and Reddit posts, no clear answers except some that said if the seller fully refunded, they clearly don’t want the item back. Well, this Friday, they messaged me asking if I sent the item back yet, so they clearly want the item back now. What do I do?

Thank you for understanding.

Your seller chose to fully refund you rather than to pay for the item’s return.
Keep, donate, or dispose of the item. You have no further obligations.

OP1 year ago@Anonymous Do I just block them? I do feel like they were trying to scam me.

You cannot block a seller. You can ignore them though, if they are messaging you.
I do not understand how you were “scammed.†You received a full refund and were allowed to keep the item that was sent.
What, other than time, was your loss?

OP1 year ago@Anonymous Okay and what I mean by “tried to scam me†I meant that the listing and description said one thing and I received something else. I brought up that I received something else with pictures, the seller paid no mind to that. No “Maybe, I sent you the wrong item by mistake. Return that and I’ll give you the item you paid for.†Nothing. Just “Sorry that happened to you,†and placed the blame on USPS for the bottom of the box being open which that part they are probably correct about. The thing is the seller sent me a picture of the item already packed up, labeled, and ready to ship and that’s the way the item came to me, but a slightly flatter and longer because the bottom was open. The shipping packaging has no outward damage to it. No one opened the package to swap out the item I ordered for something else, so they gave me the wrong item. On purpose or not, opened bottom of the box or not, the item that I paid for wasn’t going to be in there.
I’m happy and grateful I got my refund and if not, I would have done a chargeback because this whole situation was weird. I’ve been buying on eBay for a long time, never had any issues and everything has been smooth until now. I want to do the right thing and give them this item back, but the time wasted and the nonexistent customer service makes me want to just forget about it and let seller be without it. The seller didn’t want it back no matter how much I begged to give it back to them as it came for a refund. A return request was the only way for us to get somewhere or else I would have kept being hit with “Can’t resell†or “No returns.†Even when they tried to give me those few dollars back, they still didn’t want the item back. I thanked them when they accepted my return and refunded me. When I told them I couldn’t find the return label, they didn’t care. Said that they did their part. I would have appreciated some help with contacting eBay about this, but I’m not owed anything from them after the refund I’m sure. They haven’t said anything back after I told them I was calling different customer service numbers for help and that was on Friday.
Can a seller ask eBay to reverse a refund decision?

No, eBay will not reverse a refund decision.
I have sympathy for your poor experience, but at this point, eBay will consider the matter concluded.
I have a theory about what your seller has done, and why, but it is moot.
If you decide to leave feedback about the transaction, keep it calm, cool, and factual. Don’t leave any that may violate policy.
I hope you have better experiences with better sellers going forward.

OP1 year ago@Anonymous @Thank you for understanding and can you explain your theory on what the seller doing for myself and anyone else that comes across this post? I’m thinking they were going to tell eBay I switched out the item for something else when I did the return, so they could keep the money and item.
Though I do want to write feedback about this transaction, I won’t. The seller was extremely nice to me at first. Cancelled my order, so I could use a different payment method for the same purchase. That’s the only thing stopping me from saying anything at all and I always leave feedback on items I’ve bought. That’s the last bit of kindness I’ll give them, but I’m ignoring them after this.
I hope so, too!

Okay… this is ONLY a THEORY.
If I had an expensive item that I agreed to sell… and then decided that I did not want to sell it… I might substitute another item.
I would do this knowing full well that my customer would return the item. I would then cheerfully refund and apologize. I would substitute another item that is cheap so that I could avoid paying the return shipping by fully refunding and insisting the buyer keep the item “wrong item.†This has the added bonus of perhaps making the buyer happy with a “freebie.â€
Why do this? Because canceling orders is frowned on, results in account defects, and if enough of these defects accrue, penalties can range from reduced visibility of items for sale, plus increased fees, all the way up to permanent suspension of selling privileges.
By “accidentally†sending you the wrong item, the seller circumvents all these consequences, and can simply blame “human error†on the mistake.
Yes, it does cost them the lost shipping, but what is that in comparison to the lost value of selling the original item (the one they decided not to sell)?
And, yes, they may earn negative feedback (if the “freebie†does not mollify)… but a savvy seller knows how to have these removed. Plus, negative feedback looks bad, but it no longer is tallied in a seller’s performance metrics, so in a sense, negative feedback is meaningless.
It’s a calculated strategy to mitigate THE OCCASIONAL loss.
Again, a THEORY.
Yes, I have been an eBayer a LONG TIME, and yes, I am often accused of having a devious mind.
