Why is there sales tax on postage?

Mentor1 year agoMost States require sales tax to be collected on shipping charges. If you do not like this you have to convince your State to exempt shipping from sales tax.

OP1 year agoI have never paid tax in Rode island when I go to the usps post office to ship a package. I ship only through usps. When you state on ebay how you are going to ship, ebay should know whether to take taxes or not.

Mentor1 year agoRhode Island's legislature decides how sales taxes are calculated for purchases that are delivered to that state. That has nothing to do with what the post office charges when you buy postage.
“Delivery Charges†are included in the “sales price†of property and therefore subject to sales tax if the property sold is taxable. If the property sold is exempt, delivery charges are not subject to sales tax.

Mentor1 year agoThat isn't the same thing as this. No states charge tax when you go to USPS to buy postage. This isn't buying postage directly and being charged tax. This is being charged tax on the value of your online order. Many states charge tax on your total price you pay for an online order including the shipping as they consider that part of the value.
