Sales Tax on Bullion?
My current delivery address is in a state that applies sales tax to precious metal coins but does not apply sales tax to precious metal bullion. Over the past few weeks I have made multiple purchases where the lots have had the "List in Category" of "Collectibles & Art > Coins & Paper Money > Bullion > Silver > Bars and Rounds". Sometimes Ebay did the correct thing and did not collect sales tax. In other cases Ebay did collect sales tax. I would prefer to only bid on lots where Ebay doesn't collect the tax rather than go through the process of getting a refund from Ebay. Sales tax has also been incorrectly applied to lots with the "List In Category" of "Collectibles & Art > Coins & Paper Money > Bullion > Other Bullion". Sales Tax was also applied to one bullion lot with the "List in Category" of "Collectibles & Art > Coins & Paper Money > Bullion > Silver > Coins". It was a poured bullion bar. Understandably the "Coins" at the end of the "List in Category" chain could have caused this error. Has anyone figured out how Ebay determines whether or not to apply sales tax on precious metal bullion purchases delivered to locations where precious metal bullion is exempt from sales tax? If so, what factor does Ebay use to make the determination? Thank you.
